Roman blinds are some of the most stylish, affordable and easy to maintain window dressings. Unlike curtains, you don't have to take them down and wash them or worse, take them to a professional cleaner. You can clean and maintain your Roman blinds in your own home, for a very low cost.
First, when you vacuum your home, vacuum your blinds as well. This cleans up any dust or mite build-up in the blinds. Simply add a smaller nozzle to the vacuum cleaner and go over the blinds.
If your Roman blinds have any embroidery, lace or decorative needlework, you may also need to dust them. Don't vacuum over embroidery or lace as the vacuum could loosen stitches or damage delicate trimmings.
Use a feather or static duster when you dust the rest of the room to collect any extra dust. Alternatively, spray shades with dust repellent and fabric freshener and rinse with clean water.
Roman blinds are less prone to stains than curtains, as they don't hang down near the floor, where children and pets often attack them. However, if you notice a stain on your Roman blinds, attack it with a non-abrasive fabric stain remover and warm, damp water. Club soda will lift away most non-greasy stains.
If your blinds get really dirty, you may wish to wash them. This couldn't be easier you can remove Roman blinds from with window with little fuss. Remove all the dowel from the Roman blinds before washing, but you can keep the strings in if you prefer.
Wash the shades separately with just enough warm water to cover them. Instead of powder, try a liquid detergent, so you don't end up with powder clinging to your blinds. Hand wash sheer blinds to prevent tearing. Rinse the shades in cool water and allow them to drip dry. Restring your shades and hang them up again.
Regularly check your Roman blinds for wear, tears, stains, broken loops, unravelled stitching drooping hems and other problems. Some of these things you can repair yourself others you might need to hire a seamstress or take the Roman blinds back to the manufacturer.
