It's a three day weekend this time. You do not feel like going outstation, in fact you do not feel like going anywhere at all. All you want to do is curl up on your couch and feast on electronic entertainment. Your brand new 3D enabled television and your 7.1 channel home theater is beckoning you. You can almost note the slight pout as the system admonishes you for not letting it show off its full capabilities. You realize that you quickly need to charm it, lest it decides to permanently get angry and refuse optimum performance ever (scary!). To be honest, in your heart of heart you are as jumpy as a child with a new toy, waiting to finish his green vegetables so he can go play.
So, you take off early on Thursday evening to check out that new DVD parlour in your vicinity. You better and ask for movies in 3D. The rental guy throws up a selection before you. It's not a very large collection naturally, but that does not bother you. You select the few that interest you. Avatar probably tops your list and you quickly head home. All chores swiftly completed you settle down for your movie marathon. And as the beautiful land of the "navi's" with its beautiful foliage mesmerizes you, you realize that movies in 3D are an astounding experience. To feel part of the scene, to feel the urge to reach out and touch the beautiful swaying "navi" leaves, to just let the brain believe what it sees is so surreal. Yes, surreal is the right word. That's what a movie in 3D helps us experience a surreal dual existence. Where a part of you is fully aware that the shimmering firefly like insect is not really in your vicinity, yet a part of you still reaches out for it, while a third smug part just detaches its
elf and enjoys declaring, "I told you so!"
Yes 3D movies really are a different experience altogether. Whether at home or at the theater you come out of it feeling like you lived your dream of being on celluloid. And isn't that a secret dream that we all have, c'mon admit it. Yes, 3D allows us to dream and be a part of it, a real Alice in a real wonderland. Surreal!
