Identifying the product portfolio and list of products for marketing is always very tricky and challenging for many corporate especially for FMCG sector. The marketing managers and marketing teams by and large come up with crazy & frizzy ideas. More often than not, entrepreneurs get thrilled and charged by such high voltage discussions.
Most suggestions or product ideas are largely taken from what is already happening in market place elsewhere. An organization called X' has met with success on a product Z' hence a product similar to Z' with different/additional benefits will be wise the bet... this is how most of the high voltage discussions would flow. Product insight and need gap are notionally understood and only the success story of others will be tried to replicate. Will such an effort be successful? What original idea can be synthesized and tested? Or can we make success as byproduct' of trial and error'..
If an entrepreneur is willing look at the panorama of nature, they will get definite idea on how the marketing of various products has to be done.
Difference in the distribution pattern of various plants and animals in more of less same ecological nice in different geographic areas can be seen. For example, the grass land ecosystem in Australia, Kangaroo occupies. Where as the same ecosystem in other continents, wide variety of ungulates and deer are distributed. The obvious difference in the morphology and sexual dimorphism of elephants in India, Africa, Borneo and Sri Lanka also explain how species difference had occurred within the same species (race/subspecies) to suite to the local ecosystem. This is true for flora also. Different species of plants can be seen in different geographic localities/continents.
The grass lands differ in different areas such as savanna, prairies, steppes, veld, downs, pampas etc. How nature has applied so much of its choice according to the local needs and differences. It has not made its job easy by creating one plant eater, animal eater etc, for the entire globe. Nature had worked hard, studied the difference that exist in different continents, understood about the success possibility of these animals in different areas and made the necessary adaptations in these animals as & when required.
It is not species generality but species specificity is what natural selection is all about in the biome. Every entrepreneur must understand this. However nice a flowering plant may be in a high altitude mountain forest, it does not survive in desert. The beauty and uniqueness of the plant should not be driving force the entrepreneur should get tied to, but what would survive if business area were a desert zone.
The fitment and native factors has to be understood well. A total and comprehensive approach is must for marketing as to know what, when, where and how than the element of mereof thrill' of wah'.
