If the closest village is like 5 km away from the lost climber, expeditor, explorer (or whoever else) they are not likely to know that there is actually a village that close. However, by using the violet laser pointer in all directions, somebody will certainly notice the signs of SOS. So it may sound unlikely but the truth is that thanks to the 50mw power of a laser, a life can be saved.
And of course, the good thing about that kind of lasers is that they will always be there for their owner. The batteries of those gadgets are so long-lasting that they could actually be used forever- several years, to be more specific, even if the laser pointer is used every day. But who uses a laser pointer every day? So practically, buying two AAA batteries once will mean nearly endless usage.
