subject: Zylog To Boost Low-cost Computing In India [print this page] In a bid to boost low-cost computing in India, Zylog Systems, a Chennai-based mid-sized IT solutions and services firm, has announced its plans to introduce PowerCube, a desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS)-enabled computing service in the country. The new computing service has been powered by IBM and Ubuntu, an open standards-based platform. Zylog will also be the system integrator (SI) providing support services to its customers.
Reducing cost of ownership
According to the company, the DaaS-enabled PCs will operate in the lines of Software as a Service (SaaS) and will be introduced in India sometime this year. A senior official of the company informed that the price of these PCs would be nearly 60% less than the Windows-based PCs that are currently available in the market. He added that as these PCs can reduce the total cost of ownership, these can be ideal for the SME segment in India.
The PCs are equipped with Word processing, slides and spreadsheets from IBM Lotus Symphony. It also offers e-mail services from IBM Lotus Notes and LotusLive iNotes, which is cloud-based. Consumers have to pay a monthly charge to the vendors to get the support services whenever required.
Empowering SMEs
A senior official at Zylog Systems informed that the company has recently launched PowerCube PCs in the US market, where it got an excellent response. The company had targeted mid-sized businesses in the retail and education segments in the US. Now, it plans to introduce PowerCube PCs in India and other emerging markets such as Brazil and South Africa, among others.
The Window-based PCs that are generally available in the Indian market today are of a much higher cost and beyond the reach of many SMEs and MSMEs in the country. Therefore, the low-cost computing devices will be a boon for these businesses, said Manas Sinha, technical manager at Desktop Solutions, a Patna-based small IT service provider.
Zylog has said that it has invested nearly Rs 4 crore on the resources and go-to-market strategy for PowerCube in the country and expects much traction for these PCs in the Indian market.
