Built from parts found lying around, Toy Pedal Cars were introduced in the 1890's and consisted of sheets steel covering the pedal car's wooden frame. Full size carriage lights, starting cranks and license plates furnished the car's trim, giving children the chance to take to their pavements in little cars of their own.
From vintage Toy Cars to Classic, and never forgetting the Ride on Steel Pedal Fire Trucks, these hugely popular toys have been a hit with both kids and collectors from the 1890's.
Driving in a Steel Ride On Car gave children who were lucky enough to own one, the feeling of "driving a real car".
At the time of their introduction, owning a Ride On Toy Vintage Car was only for the more financially secure and prosperous families due to their high price tag.
It wasn't until the great depression that the popularity of these Toy Pedal Cars declined.
Then during World War 2, limited production of the Toy Cars meant great difficulty in finding and/or affording one as metal was needed in support of the war effort and not allowed for much else.
In the 1950's, an economic boom was experienced once the war ended and the popularity of the Toy Steel Cars was boosted to new heights.
The Cars matured in both function and looks with the introduction of new chain driven mechanisms and more realistic features being incorporated such as headlights,
horn and even custom paint finishes.
It was during this time that new steel ride on Cars began emerging. Other types of steel ride on cars were introduced such as the plane and trucks, making the Toy Steel Cars not only a must have toy for children, but also ensuring it's place in the future collectors market.
The non existence of safety standards back in the 1950's meant the Pedal Cars had no brakes (a little dangerous on hills and slopes) and most, if not all, were painted with lead based paint. Still, they remained popular until the 1960's.
It was during this time that the exciting field of exploration and travel captured the minds of the country's youngsters, and the interest that was once invested in the Toy Pedal Cars was refocused on exploring the unknown.
