Triathletes and competitive swimmers are an incredibly determined group. Their determination, commitment and ambition push them to set arduous goals, then beat them time and time again. And when it comes to overachieving, no one does it like the Cadets of West Point's Triathlon Team. In 2007, they won a bronze medal in the ITU Worlds in Hamburg, placed fifth overall in Collegiate Nationals and won an individual gold medal in Age Group Nationals.
Their path to glory is a compelling tale, and one that is detailed in Overachiever's Diary: How the Army Triathlon Team Became World Contenders, by Louis Clay Tharp.
Tharp, a World Masters medalist and competitive swimmer, is the swim coach of the West Point's Tri Team. During his own individual journey toward a better lifestyle, he discovered Total Immersion, an uncommon training approach designed to give faster, more fluent results than widespread methods. He used these techniques to help the team maintain efficient strokes, increase speed and maximize workouts through not only physical means, but also cognitive.
Louis Clay Tharp wrote interesting day by day emails to the team containing what to expect at practicehow it will be done, its benefits and why it is useful. This special coaching means resulted in a batch of inspiring, useful and often humorous emails that ultimately turned into Overachiever's Diary.
The book is broken down into three important sections:
* Mechanics (the largest section): Tips, techniques and drills
* Math (math is always logical, swimming usually isn't): Measuring efficiency and speed, as well as establishing practical goals. This section is designed with the "mathlete" in mind.
* Motivation: Encouraging emails sent to the Cadets before major events
Tharp's mentor, and founder of Total Immersion, Terry Laughlin, provided the introduction. The book also includes numerous essays by Laurie Ferguson PhD, psychologist and motivational speaker, on the importance of confidence, attitude and motivation.
Overachiever's Diary simplifies mechanics and motivation into terms every athlete can understand. It inspires, enlightens and pushes the physical and psychological limits of overachievers worldwide.
A portion of the proceeds from Overachiever's Diary will be donated to the US Army tri team.
