subject: Enjoy The Health Benefits Of Hot Tubs [print this page]

When it comes to the ultimate in relaxation nothing quite beats the feeling of hydrotherapy. Normally when people talk about hydrotherapy they assume you have to pay expensive fees to a spar or health centre, to spend some time in their spas. However there is a more convenient way to enjoy all of the benefits from your very own home.

Home spas and hot tubs are exactly like the ones you find at private spas, except they are normally smaller as they only need to accommodate anything from 2 to 8 people at a time. They are a great feature for any home, and really bring about a great means of escape and relaxation, without having to travel miles away!

Generally they work by water jets which you can position to target specific body areas. You can often also regulate the flow of the water and its intensity. These jets come in all different sizes, from large ones mainly used in hot tubs, to incredibly small ones created to make a constant flow of tiny jets.

In the past spas with just a handful of jets were considered top of the range, now however you can easily get them with well over 300 jets! In saying that, the basic design of spas has not changed in quite a number of years. Most are made of an interior plastic, with either a resin or wooden exterior. All wooden exteriors are treated for protection against water, and are durable enough to withstand constantly getting wet.

Hydrotherapy has been used for thousands of years, in fact research shows that the Egyptians used bath houses all over Egypt and Africa. These were social places where you could go and be pampered, much like today's modern spas. More famously however are Roman baths, which were communal baths for the people in almost every large town or city. These were not only there for people to clean in, but also for socialising and they would often spend considerable amounts of time at the bath houses.

In the past hydrotherapy was used to cure or alleviate the problems of countless different ailments and health issues. Up until a hundred years ago hydrotherapy was still used medically for treating things such as alcoholism. This has since given way to more modern forms of treatment, as is the fate of many other natural and holistic methods.

Modern hydrotherapy is still used however and not just in holistic medicine. Hydrotherapy is used the world over to treat problems such as arthritis, geriatric issues and physical therapy. One of it's main advantages over other forms of therapy is its gentle warmth and calming affects, which spread throughout the body to relieve tension and stress.

The term spa and hot tub are interchangeable, with both word meaning the same thing. However when branded as a hot tub generally the purpose is for recreation and pleasure whereas spas are more focused on hydrotherapy, relaxation and calming. Generally speaking hot tubs will use more powerful jets and might even have recreational items such as built in flat screen televisions and DVD players.
