Calcium oxalate kidney stones are the most common kind of kidney stones, but with the right information they can often be prevented. A double nutritional deficiency, in a vast majority of cases, causes these troublesome stones. A simple home treatment can be found by adding daily supplements of the two deficient nutrients - magnesium and vitamin B6. This may be all that's needed to eliminate this agonizing ailment.
A Harvard research team, Drs. Edwin L. Prien, Sr., and Stanley F. Gershoff, first published their successful use of the double supplement remedy in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, in May of 1967. They tested 36 patients who previously had formed at least two urinary stones a year. Of the 36 patients, 30 either had no further stone recurrence or markedly decreased recurrence during the five years or more they continued to take the daily supplements of magnesium oxide and pyridoxine (vitamin B6).
The chance of successfully riding yourself of kidney stones is very high. Drs. Prien and Gershoff, in their article published in the Journal of Urology (October 1974), report on an expanded study, involving 265 carefully selected patients, all with a long history of recurring stone formation. During the five-year study, 98 patients were lost to the study for a variety of reasons. Of the 167 patients who stayed with the program and continued to take the suggested supplements, only 17 continued to form stones as in the past. Eighteen others continued to have pain symptoms (though milder than before) and probably passed small pieces of stone. The remaining 132 were kidney stone-free for the entire five-year time period.
All of the 89 percent benefited, and 79 percent found complete protection simply by regularly taking of two harmless supplements!
According to Dr. Prien and Dr. Gershoff, some of the patients stopped taking the supplements after being free of stones for a time. These patients began having stones again within a few weeks. Once the returned to the regimen of daily supplements, they became free of stones again.
It seems very clear that some people, with a natural tendency to produce kidney stones, are missing the protective nutrient. Adding magnesium and vitamin B6 to the diet, thus restoring the natural protection against stone formation, can provide this natural protection.
The amounts of magnesium and vitamin B6 are not mega doses. On the contrary, they are very reasonable. The doctors in the study found that only 300 mg. of magnesium oxide actually less that the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of 350 mg. is needed. The dose of vitamin B6 that is required to provide protection against stones is 10 mg., which is five times greater that the RDA. But much research on vitamin B6 recommends that 10 mg. is probably much closer to the need for this vitamin than the 2 mg. recommended in the RDA.
What do these nutrients do in your system? Magnesium makes the urine more solvent in respect to oxalates. With greater solvency, the urine can hold the crystals in solution with less chance of clumping together of particles, and less chance of forming kidney stones.
Vitamin B6, on the other hand, has no effect on the solubility of oxalate in the urine, but appears to help control the body's production of oxalic acid and therefore to limit the amount reaching the kidneys. Less oxalic acid means fewer kidney stones for you.
