We drop everything and are there as soon as we are able...re-arrange our school and work schedules, and we give our love, emotional and physical support.
But what happens when the emergency lasts longer than we can let go of our jobs, the commitments that we need to fulfill in our own lives? We could do with a little support ourselves as well as our needy loved one!
Our world as we know it today would be very different if it weren't for volunteers...environmental, social, medical and health...there are literally millions of volunteers, ordinary people who give a little or a lot of themselves and their time, to make others lives a little more bearable, and help preserve our world for our young.
How then can all the volunteer services gain all the people power they need, without spending huge amounts of dollars on advertising, to compete with more glamorous services or more well known services.
I'd like to tell you about one such service; Meals on Wheels.
Meals On Wheels has been around for so long, and in so many countries, that many of us tend to take it for granted, forgetting that getting meals out to people who cannot do this for themselves is vital to maintaining independence in their own homes, whether they be people following medical procedures who may need a temporary service, or others that may need a more long term service.
The volunteers who take meals to them become part of the team helping them remain as independent for as long as possible.
Who can deny the emotional tug when children need support recovering from cancer, and who can deny the spirit of adventure when bringing environmental causes to the notice of the "general public".
Meals On Wheels runs on people donating their time, to deliver meals to people in their own homes.
A quietly regular but vital service. Some Government assistance is given to Meals On Wheels, but this is not a government service. Meals on Wheels relies on the generosity of people giving financial support as well as the people power along with their vehicles to deliver the food.
That's MILLIONS of meals prepared and delivered to people in their own homes, for a very small cost to them.
To go back to when we needed a little help to remain on our feet, and have a little independence for ourselves or our older or needier family, we can rely on many services that are necessary; but often we give these services little thought until we need some help.
Would you work for nothing? We all work for some reason, whether it be financial necessity, but there are other rewards for effort. It gives me great job satisfaction to work in a voluntary capacity, and a wonderful reward to know that you are making a real difference.
I would like to Promote Meals On Wheels to you.
As the UTube states, many of our volunteers are getting older, some have been with Meals On Wheels for 30 years, but the demand for services to help us remain independent are increasing, not decreasing, and we, Meals on Wheels needs more volunteers.
I would like to appeal to any person working from home, or looking for work...Meals on Wheels is not just a service for the aged, any person unable to manage the whole food thing, whether temporarily or longer needs to have this service available...Meals On Wheels is an endangered species, and needs conserving just as much as the rarest bird on earth!
