The V-22 first flew from Bell's research facility in Arlington Texas on March 19, 1989 and made its first transition from vertical to horizontal flight in September 1989. The Osprey has twice the speed and range of a conventional helicopter and can be deployed anywhere in the world within 36 hours. A standard helicopter requires three times as much maintenance as the Osprey making the V-22 a very attractive alternative.
The aircraft can operate from both land and carrier based stations and can be refuelled in flight which substantially increases its range and gives the V-22 unmatched global effectiveness. The Osprey features a technically advanced glass cockpit with multifunctional displays and controls. Although the aircraft takes up a lot of space when operating its rotors fold and the wings can swivel in line with the fuselage, thus reducing its footprint on aircraft carriers.
The US Marines are major supporters of the aircraft and have recognized its ability to perform high-speed assault missions. This involves bypassing defended coast lines by quickly flying troops over the top and using the Ospreys ability to transition to vertical flight and drop them behind enemy lines before the enemy can react. Helicopters and landing craft are slow moving easy targets so the V-22's ability to fly very fast like a conventional aeroplane but land and takeoff like a helicopter make it a very useful tool for the military in this and other roles. The Osprey horizontal speed and vertical flight ability have made it a potential alternative to helicopters for coast guards around the world.
The Osprey's two Allison T406-AD-400 turboprops are extremely powerful allowing them to lift the aircraft off the ground vertically with a full payload of weapons and troops. The V-22 is 25 per cent lighter than a comparable all metal aircraft of similar size and lifting power due to the extensive use of composite materials. Although the Osprey has a smaller capacity of 25 troops in comparison to the CH-53 helicopter which can carry 55 troops, the V-22 can make three trips (75 troops landed) to every one made by the CH-53. The Osprey has faced development, technical, and political challenges but has become and will remain a very useful tool for military and coast guard application for years to come.
