Jeep Wrangler.Is it a good car to buy? I've been wanting a Jeep Wrangler since I was little. I've had Barbie Jeep Wranglers when I was little, but now that I'm 19, I was wondering if a Jeep Wrangler was a good 4?4 to buy for the winter? If you're concerned about winter driving, a Subaru or something similar with all-wheel drive is a better option. A Jeep in 4-wheel drive works well on snowy roads or EXTREMELY wet roads, but not as good as vehicles with all-wheel drive. A Jeep Wrangler is a great option for summer driving,

especially if you like driving off-road trails. The Jeep Wrangler is designed more for driving slow through mud and dirt and over rocks than for driving on icy highways. It might depend on where you live on whether you want a soft top or hard top. The heater's good enough that a soft top is fine in the winter for most locations (I wouldn't guarantee that in places like Minnesota or North Dakota). You definitely want a soft top in the summer. Driving with the doors and top off is pretty addicting. Edit: Thought a little explanation of the difference between All Wheel Drive, Full-Time 4WD, and Part-Time 4WD was in order, since there's more to 4WD than just 4WD. All Wheel Drive: The vehicle is normally in 2 wheel drive and automatically shifts to 4 wheel drive when one tire loses traction. Very good on road in any condition you might encounter, especially if the vehicle has electronic stability control (the ABS system applies braking on its own to improve the vehicle's reaction to a slide, etc). These are good for mild off-roading, as well the types of off-roading the average driver would try. Part-Time 4 Wheel Drive: This is the normal 4 wheel drive system. Driver manually selects 4 wheel drive. Transfer case delivers torque to both the front and rear axle. It's impossible to match the diameters of the front and rear drive shafts perfectly, but tire slippage corrects any mismatch. On a paved road, with good traction, you don't get tire slippage and stress out your tires, axles, drive shafts, transfer case, etc., hence the "Part Time". You only activate it when driving off-road or in snow or extremely wet roads. Your tires have to slip to avoid damage to the system. Full-Time 4 Wheel Drive: The driver manually selects 4 wheel-drive. The transfer case delivers torque to both the front and rear axles. The transfer case also has a differential, so the front and rear axles don't have to rotate at the same speed. This compensates for the mismatched drive shafts and you can use Full-Time 4 Wheel Drive even on paved roads. (Some AWD vehicles are really Full-Time 4WD, but I think that's only true for some used vehicles). 4 Wheel Lo: 4 Wheel Low is what makes a Jeep or other off-road vehicle so good off-road. It gives you a whole range of gears below first. You get a lot of torque and can climb just about anything. Or, you can get the Jeep Rubicon with an even larger drive ratio to get even lower gears and climb anything (or at least anything short of a vertical cliff). You only use 4 Wheel Low in extreme off-road conditions. For one thing, your top speed in 4 Wheel Low might reach 15 or 20 mph. The differential in the axles on your Jeep makes a difference, too. (All vehicles have differentials in the axles, while only Full-Time 4 Wheel Drive vehicles have differentials in the transfer case). With open differentials (just like normal cars), torque is delivered to the wheel that's spinning fastest. This is what makes it possible to go around a corner on a paved road. The outside tire has further to go and has to spin faster. This is what gets vehicles stuck in mud. If one tire starts spinning in the mud, all the torque winds up going to that tire and none to the tire that still has traction. With 4 wheel drive, you have to lose traction with both a front tire and a rear tire to get stuck. Limited slip differentials. You can't get all of the torque going to the wheel spinning fastest no matter how fast it spins. About 25% of the torque available to that axle will go to the tire that still has traction. Obviously a lot better off road than an open differential. Locked differential. These always have to be activated manually, the most convenient being air lockers that are activated with a switch. Both wheels spin at the same speed, no matter what. Torque is delivered to the tire with the best traction. Gets you through almost anything, but very bad for the axles and tires when cornering on pavement they don't let the outside tire spin faster than the inside tire(which is why they're activated manually for the worst situations and deactivated when not needed).
