Whats the Best Way to Get Fit

Start with small steps

If you're a card-carrying couch potato, you need to ease your way into fitness. Don't make big plans just yet, because they'll probably fail. Just build a little more activity into each day. Use the stairs instead of the elevator, walk to work, or if you use public transport, get off a stop earlier than usual.

Instead of collapsing in front of the television or games console after your evening meal, go for a walk - even 10 minutes is a good start. Walk up and down the stairs when you don't really need to, and put some extra oomph into the housework. Move around more, and move around more quickly. As you get used to the increased level of activity, aim a little higher, and go for some specific aerobic exercise.

Do something you enjoy

If you like swimming, fix a regular session - preferably with someone else, so you both encourage each other to keep to your schedule. Or designate a time for the family to go swimming together. Swimming is enjoyable, and it uses every muscle group in the body, so it's a great all-round exercise.

If you can't swim, or you don't enjoy swimming, consider enrolling in a dance class or exercise class. Again, it works better with company. It's easy to say, 'I'll give it a miss tonight,' but if there are two or three of you going together, it becomes a social occasion, rather than just exercise.

If you're not a great lover of formal exercise, you can still get fit. Go for a nice long walk in the countryside, and choose a route with some hills and rough ground to make your heart work harder and build up a sweat. Get the family together, or a group of friends, and take a picnic. As you become fitter, add some weight to your backpack, so that you work a little harder. Aim to get slightly out of breath, but not to the point where you're gasping for air and on the point of collapse.

Consider the gym or a health club

This is down to personal choice and available finance. If you're the type of person who is only likely to stick with a fitness campaign if you've paid out money, or if someone works out your schedule, this may be your best option. Just remember that these things cost money, and budget accordingly.

The great thing is, the more active you become, the more active you will want to be. Take it gradually, set realistic goals, and you will get fit sooner than you think.
