I recently did some research on the internet to see if it was possible to find out for free who a cell phone number belongs to.
How did I start the research?
I started with what I thought was the most obvious step - I entered the cell number of a friend into a search engine. I didn't find anything. This won't always be the case - especially if the cell number belongs to a business person who wants you to know their number. Many small businesses have their number displayed on their website, in which case a quick internet search will find the owner.
Next, I searched for "free reverse cell phone lookup ". The results were interesting and there were lots of them. Try it for yourself and you'll see what I mean.
Lots of them are blatantly lying - you get to the site and there is no mention of free. There's a good reason for that.
A few sites are listings of, so called, free sites. I found one that had a list of over twenty sites that it claimed offered free reverse cell phone lookups.
Did I find a free reverse cell phone lookup site?
I started at the top of the list and worked my way down.
The first site did offer free reverse lookup - but not for cell phones. In fact it said clearly "TIP - cell phone numbers are not available". Time to move on.
I tried the second site on the list. This told me I could "get top web results from Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask and Twitter in just one click". Not a reverse phone lookup site at all - just results from the search engines. I know I can get the answer I want using a search engine - that was the first thing I tried.
I moved on to the third site on the list. This claimed to have a record of the number and told me how much I would have to pay to see the answer.
I'm starting to lose faith in search engines by now - or at least I'm losing faith in the ability of site owners to be truthful about the content of their sites!
I tried the fourth site. This started with a warning telling me that if I was looking for an unlisted, cell or pager number "you may not find it".
I decided to try one more site. Was I in for a shock! They wanted to charge me $49 just for ONE result. They weren't a free lookup service at all - they were a private detective agency.
