Hot new travel destinations for 2011

Whether you're tired of the same old destinations or just looking for something different to do on your holidays in 2011, there are many exciting up-and-coming destinations tempting travellers with low prices, amazing experiences and the chance to enjoy your break away from the tourist crowds.

You don't have to be an adventure-seeker to enjoy these destinations off the beaten track, but if you do have a passion for the outdoors, head to magnificent Asia. Countries such as Tibet are visited by relatively few tourists, partly because it can sometimes be a tricky and time-consuming process to be permitted entry, but those who visit never fail to be blown away by the majestic Himalayan scenery and cultural attractions. Areas such as Lhasa are particularly appealing for being so remote, and you'll truly feel like you're on top of the world in this city at nearly 12,000 feet.

Africa provides tough competition to Asia as the continent with the greatest diversity for travellers, and countries like Zambia offer the best of Africa in one package. A far cry from the developed cities of South Africa, Zambia may be more rugged, but you shouldn't let that deter you. In fact, with its incredible safari opportunities, not to mention the abundance of outdoor activities such as trekking and canoeing, Zambia is being billed as the African destination to watch in 2011.

You don't have to head outside of the English-speaking world to enjoy great landscapes however, with the mighty island of Australia offering a wealth of experiences in a nation with one of the highest quality of life indexes in the world. If you're keen to see the 'real' Australia and you aren't tempted by the big cities, consider heading into more remote locations, such as Kimberley in the north-west - a destination that was previously the domain of archaeologists, but is slowly earning its place on the tourism map with cruises and other package deals available.

There may be many places you've long thought about visiting but haven't had the time, so make 2011 the year you stop putting things off and visit the world's greatest destinations. European cities like Berlin and Paris are just a short trip from the UK, but offer a vastly different experience, and there are many excellent travel destinations right here in the British Isles that you shouldn't overlook either for cheap holidays, such as the beautiful archipelago of Orkney in Scotland.
