Sucker Punch is Zack Snyder's brainchild and tells us everything about him we already knew and more. I would go as far as saying the movie contains his essence and his spirit and is therefore the ultimate and perfect Zack Snyder film. Critics and superficial movie goers will dismiss this one, as well as other works, as "style over substance" which as become the least unoriginal and persistent mantra of visual arts master for years now (will you come up with something new already?). And while no movie can claim to be flawless when it comes to Action films few come close to Sucker Punch Full Movie. One should remember that every genre is special and different, pursuing different goals and presenting itself in a different light. I see the main objective of an Action film to be entertaining. Sucker Punch succeeds in that department and has zero tolerance for boring scenes.
The movie begins with with Babydoll (Emily Browning) losing everything in the first couple of minutes and being locked in an insane asylum, run by Dr. Gorski (Carla Gugino). As soon as she arrives there it is clear that she has two choices: trying to escape or be lobotomized. Obviously she decides to escape with new found friend Rocket (Jena Malone) and her other inmates Amber (Jamie Chung), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) and Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish) who is also Rocket's sister. Simultaneously there are other two layers to the story: one where the girls are forced to work in a brothel (managed by 'Blue') and a fantasy world that is inside of Babydoll's head and is shown to us every time she dances in the sub-reality (brothel scenario). The way these events unfold might seem predictable and not really that inventive at first aka find these items and then you'll be free and so on; in a second act the plot thickens. I severely doubt anyone could guess the ending when the movie started and the rain spelled the title of the film on the windows of an antique dark automobile.

The soundtrack of the film is a selection of covers with some songs actually performed by the cast, very impressive performances I might add especially from Emily Browning. The musical style isn't really my thing, but I still enjoyed most of the songs. There are some ballads, which I totally didn't expect. CGI and visual effects are some of the best I've ever seen (on par with Avatar or Transformers). You have your basic Zack Snyder slow motion shots and breathtaking fight scenes, amazing choreography (I didn't blink once).
Cinematography was good, although some close ups of random objects were a bit too much for me (looked a little bit fake, think The Lovely Bones). But these are all things most people didn't have to complain about so now let's see what people bashed were: the script and the acting. Some people seem to forget that Zack wrote "300" which most people were okay with, but it was based on previously established source material, so of course him being involved in the script might have been a mystery for some. I thought Sucker Punch was well written for what it was, so the dialogues were "bad" some say, I think they were real. Let's be realistic that's how people talk, plus the focus of the movie was on the battle scenes and the escape. The acting was cheesy, I can agree with that. BUT, wasn't that the point? Let's face it Zack could have hired better actors if he wanted to (I still thought Carla Gugino was awesome), he chose those actors on other criteria: appearance, physical form and cohesion with the themes and tone of the film.
Random trivia: in the medieval bit the armors of the movie Excalibur (1981) were used. Enjoy the little things: Wise Man (Scott Glenn) is one of the coolest characters in the film. He's also the only positive male figure.
The ending and the true meaning of the movie were also criticized/ridiculed/not understood by everyone. I really liked it and think it was beautifully done. The only part of the film I'm not so sure about is why they are imagining to be in a brothel, when they're in an insane asylum; but the rest is crystal clear. The only thing I would have done differently is the very last sentence of the film, which answers a series of questions that I would have preferred left there without answers, because let's face it, they don't have real answers. Or you can go and do the cheesiest and clichd thing you could think of and answer them like Mr. Snyder decided to do. I guess it does say a lot about our society and the way we view ourselves as humans though, so I can't really hate it and I see what he did there. I'm sorry I have to be so secretive, but I'm not going spoil the movie for you guys. The song/montage at the end (after the credits, I almost missed it!) with Oscar Isaac and Carla Gugino really turns everything around and makes the movie even sexier (kind of felt a Repo! The Genetic Opera vibe).
It's a great film. A modern Cult Classic, like it or not, and it deserves to be viewed in theaters. You can try to do ignorant things and compare this movie to other movies, but there's nothing like it and now that it was a commercial flop we probably won't get anything like it. Ever.
