I know I know, twitter's not supposed to have rules. We're supposed to figure this thing out as we go. Yada, yada, yada. I agree that you should be allowed to be yourself on twitter. If I see something in a direct message, it gets my attention because it is something someone sent directly to me instead of the whole twitterverse. An auto dm is impersonal. It is better to take the time to get to know someone before you start using direct messaging them.
2. Don't use direct messaging for something that can be talked about in the public timeline. I know there are some things that you want to keep between you and the other person you're tweeting to (phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, etc.). It's okay to use direct messaging for that. I get really annoyed when someone is sending me a direct message about something they've already tweeted. That seems a little repetitive. Another thing that annoys people is when you send direct messages to thank people for following you. Put that kind of stuff in the public timeline. It's best to only use direct messaging when you are talking about something that is only pertinent to you and that other person.
3. Don't start sending of direct messages until you are certain that the person you are sending a direct message to actually reads their direct messages. A lot of people have gotten so fed up with the spam that gets sent through direct messaging that they don't even read stuff that gets sent to them via direct message. It's your best bet to send @replies before you start sending direct messages that might not even get read.
