How to Perform Below Balance Weighing and Common Applications with your Precision Balances

First, switch off the balance.

Open the closing lid which is located on the bottom of the balance.

Place your balance on a table or raised platform that has an opening in it. Position the balance so that the suspension hook is directly over the opening.

Suspend the items to be weighed from the hook and carry out the weighing.

The under scale weighing process is similar for Kern lab balance precision. One added advantage is that is more convenient to open the closing lid at the bottom of a precision balance, since its small size and light weight makes it easier to turn over. In the case of the Kern 440 precision balances, the weighing process is similar, with the added precaution of carefully and completely screwing the hook for suspended weighing without damaging the balance.

For the PRS/PRJ series of Kern balances, the weighing process is slightly different.

Remove the scale-pan and the scale pan support and turn the balance over.

You need to push the metal-cover on the underside of the balance to one side.

The balance is supplied with a small hook as an accessory. You need to hang this into the aperture metal casting which will now be visible.

Place the balance over an opening in the table or raised platform.

Replace the scale pan support and the scale pan.

Level the balance.

Switch on the balance.

Hang the object to be weighed on the hook and carry out the weighing.

For all models of Kern balances, it is recommended that you take the following precautions.

Make sure that you always use only the original hook supplied by KERN.

Always ensure that the items you suspend from the hook are stable enough and that there is no risk of breaking.

Before you suspend any item, make sure that you are aware of the stated maximum load for the balance model you are using. Never suspend loads that exceed this limit.

Always ensure that the floor space under the suspended load is clear of persons, animals or objects that might be damaged

After the process of underfloor weighing has been completed, take care to close the opening on the bottom of the balance. This will prevent any dust from getting into the balance.
