One of the best tips given to me by my chiropractor years ago was the following. I found it useful in the beginning, to calm my spasming muscles in the lower back. A bulged disk that flares up will cause the muscles in the area to spasm and tighten. One of the ways to relax these muscles is through massage.
The problem with having a massage, is usually the drive to your local therapist and back. As a friend of mine told me this week, he felt his pain reduced by half when he walked out of the therapists office. By the time he came back home after the drive back, his pain level was already back to its previous level before the treatment.
A wasted effort of time and money. What if you can have pinpointed massage at home that costs nothing? Here's how:
Find two tennis balls that lie around the house.
Place them in a sock, tie the end of the sock leaving enough space in the sock for the balls to move around a little.
Place the balled sock on the floor and lie on it, while rolling slowly allowing the balls to gently press on the muscles on both sids of the spine.
Relax and arch your back, breathing in and out slowly as you feel your body melting into the contours of the balls.
Get up, walk around and repeat. Using this method and some other methods, will reduce the tension in your back. Take the sock with you, and repeat lying on them periodically throughout the day, to continue relaxing the muscles until the knots are weakened and the area relaxes, melting away the pain that is caused by the bulged disk.
Of course, having someones healing touch on your aching muscles is the best treatment you can get. When you are in extreme pain, there is not much you can do. You can't think or focus, or perform much physical activity anyway.
You cannot lounge around though. Rest is your worst enemy, it only prolongs healing time. Since most cases of back pain will resolve themselves within a couple of weeks, do everything you can to quicken the process. Relaxation is key, relax the tightened muscles and your mind.
