ARCA, a national association unique for its promotion and support of informal adult learning and short residential courses in extraordinary locations, has just extended itself further. ARCA has now opened its doors to a whole new membership, as part of a drive to promote informal adult residential courses in the UK.
As the state and its agencies slash their budgets, retreating from the long tradition of support for adult education, course providers are finding new ways to deliver courses in unusual venues such as in country houses and hotels.
Whereas formerly for colleges and institutions, the new membership is open to any providers of residential short courses for the general public. Central to the ARCA philosophy is the belief that the residential element of the courses enhances the learning experience.
ARCA is the only association of professional providers of residential short courses for adults in the United Kingdom. Across the country there is now a rich tapestry of course provision which offers weekend or slightly longer courses to the general public. These courses offer great value not just in terms of the cost but also in the standard of tuition and in the friendships which are made.
All courses are offered for the love of learning with no exams for sit. Enrolment qualifications are either self-evident or non-existent. Enthusiasm and enjoyment is what it's all about.
In the words of a 2009 government white paper entitled The Learning Revolution: "The Government recognises that informal adult learning can transform individual lives and boost our nation's well-being."
