Don't let the fact that your run-in shed stays empty most of the time fool youhorses appreciate having shelter in wet, windy weather.
For a recent study, Michigan State University researchers monitored eight small Arabian herds kept in pastures with run-in sheds. In the first phase of the Study, investigators took 676 "sample scans" of the herds over a 12-month period. In each scan, the researchers noted whether the sheds were in use by any animal.
In the second phase of the study, researchers randomly selected "focal" animals in each herd and observed them twice a week for 16 weeks. At each observation time, researchers noted weather conditions and temperature and whether or not the focal animal was in the shed.
The data showed that the sheds were occupied only 10 percent of the time, but usage increased dramatically in windy or wet weather. The most frequent shed usage, 62 percent, occurred when it was snowing and wind speeds were greater than five meters per second (about 11 miles per hour). The researchers conclude that "shelter access is very important in certain weather conditions."
