Survive an Affair: Where Do I Go From Here?

It is a tough experience for any married couple when they are put into a situation that they need to learn how to survive an affair. And it is important anyone going through this difficult time in their marriage take their time making sure that they do not create more problems in the process. And if you decided to read my article I have to assume that you are one of the unfortunate ones that have learned that infidelity has entered your marriage. And you also must be asking yourself "where do I go from here?

This first thing that you must come to grips with is that this is not your fault. You are not the one that is going around sleeping with another lover. Your spouse is the one that has to own up to his/her mistake. And this may be the most difficult part about the process. If your spouse has told you about the affair, then you are half way there. If not, then you are going to have to find a way to get them to take ownership of the situation.

The second step is to have a heart to heart conversation about what lead to the affair in the first place. Why did your spouse themselves into this situation? Why were they weak at this particular moment? Is the affair cause by any part due to a weakness in your relationship with your spouse, or is it just that your spouse is not happy with his/her life right now for what ever reason? These are all very good questions that need to be asked to determine if it is worth your time to work on your marriage to get over the infidelity.

Then the final step is working together to find ways to address your issues in the marriage. It is going to take some time to rebuild the trust that was once in your relationship. It is important that you both not rush through trying to make everything the way it was before. Your relationship will never be exactly the way it was before. But you and your spouse can build a new marriage that builds on better communication, love and understanding.

It takes a lot of hard work and time when it comes to learning how to survive an affair. I wish you the best if you are in this situation and pray that you and your spouse are able to rebuild your marriage from the ground up.
