Even the most pristine supplies can become contaminated with illness-causing germs. The higher the population is surrounding the supply, the higher the number of germs.
In the late 1800s, waterborne illnesses in heavily populated areas of the US were common. To help prevent illness and protect the population, widespread chlorination began. In a short time, chlorinating public supplies became the rule in all industrialized nations. As a result, outbreaks of waterborne illnesses declined and the population was safeat least in some ways.
Doctors began to notice an increased incidence of certain kinds of cancer in areas where chlorine was commonly consumed through drinking tap water.
According to some of the advertisements, drinking natural alkaline water may help prevent or even cure cancer. That's impossible for at least two reasons.
One is that increasing the alkalinity of the liquid does not remove the chlorine or the chlorination byproducts. The cancer risks associated with chlorination and chlorination byproducts cannot be erased by changing the water's pH level.
The other reason is that it is impossible to change the pH level of your bloodstream by eating or drinking something. The body naturally maintains the blood's pH at a tight range between 7.35 and 7.45. Only serious illnesses like decreased lung function can cause a change in the blood's pH level.
Truly natural alkaline water would be rich in minerals, which might be good for your health, but would still have no effect on the acidity or alkalinity of your bloodstream. Any chemist would tell you the same thing.
Ionizers are a waste of money, because they provide no benefits, whatsoever. You would be much better off purchasing a good carbon filter to remove the chlorine. Some of the better purifiers remove the chlorination byproducts, too.
One of the best purifiers actually creates something like natural alkaline water by adding traces of minerals as it removes traces of lead and other impurities.
There might not be any health benefits of the added minerals, but it does improve the taste.
