Woods has claimed an "indefinite" break from golf and acknowledged his infidelity to his wife.
"I believe that is a sign he wants to send a strong message to his family that he is serious about dealing with the problems," Casey Cooper, a California-based sports psychologist said.
"It really is impossible for him as he has already had the travel schedule of a competitive professional athlete." Palm Beach-based psychologist John F Murray said, who has worked together with NFL players and professional tennis.
" It is, how to say, too much for him - he needs an escape, and that's some kind of relief from the pressure. Of course, he needs a break," said Murray.
"Tiger isn't just a golfer, but an empire and has a lot of people who advise him. He has probably been suggested that he should have a break, to think of a plan or even a strategy."
Cooper said she worried the public inspection of his private life would have negative effect on Woods' performance when he returned.
"As to the typical athlete, these types of distractions can, to some degree, definitely affect their performance. However, Tiger has proved that he is always capable of coping with his off-course life separately from his performance," she said.
"I think his step away isn't about protecting his performance, it is about how he is going to tackle his family issue, which requires both time and his physical presence that he just can't do if he is on the tour."
Most fans hope that next year Woods will come back to play, but a major question how he will address the disdain of his former image still remains. And Murray said one possible way to solve that problem is to embrace the change.
"He could do just what John McEnroe did in tennis and become the bad boy of golf," Murray said.
"I don't know whether he could be the bad boy and at the same time, I don't know how he is going to keep that clean image as well."
