How a Personal Trainers Attitude can effect your mind set

How your instructors or Personal Trainer communicates with you is critical in the outcome of your personal training sessions. I realised the importance of a PTI's attitude while on a Marine training day in November 2010.

We had instructors around us who kept telling us to keep up and keep in step. They were really negative, with zero positivity. This was really draining and a mile into it we had a long gradually climb through a quarry, which was starting to see me off. I was struggling with leg burn, sore shoulders. I really needed to have a break, but this wasn't going to happen. Also not knowing the route I couldn't pace myself. I struggled on and at last got to the water stop. By now my feet were starting to throb though I couldn't feel any blisters forming. I quickly got some more water down my neck and started on my jelly babies. I started to feel a little better.

After 5mins we then set off again we were in what is known as leafy lane and we had another 2miles or so to go. I started of fresh, but with in minutes my legs and shoulders were burning again. As I was walking the sun was shining between the branches and flickering in my eyes, which just made me feel dizzy and try as I could I couldn't avoid this. The trek back the camp felt like an eternity, but I managed it. The soles of my feet felt bruised, but I had amazingly managed to avoid blisters. As soon as we got back it was time for a shower, which sounds lovely and for a split second it was, until the hot water hit the gorse marks and then it stung!

Although I struggled a lot on this particular day, I know if I had a positive instructor or PTI, I would have been far more up beat. His negative attitude affected me mentally and all the pain I was suffering was far more noticable. I appreciate he was trying to make us tougher and more mentally strong, but at times you need positivity. I think if he was more positivem I would not have struggled at all.
