Many people often discuss the best recent movies and how they relate to movies in the past. Some say that earlier movies are much better in a variety of areas. Some will point to acting, plot, or various other movie elements. I personally enjoy the more recent movies much more than those made over thirty years ago. I have a difficult time watching anything in black and white or some of the more grainy movies that were filmed.
Now, don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed some of the older movies greatly. I just don't see why AFI consistently ranks movies such as Casablanca and Citizen Kane as top five all time movies. I've seen both these movies and I was not too terribly impressed.
Although there have been a high number of "duds" in recent movies, I venture to say there are no more than what was in the past. I enjoy some of the more mind-bending movies that provide a twist at the end (or middle).
So, with that being said, here is my list of the top five movies of the past ten years.
1. Inception: This film makes it to number one on my list. The different twists and turns really made this movie stand out to me. Inception has a very slick style to it. The excellent special effects combined with great storytelling made me think about this movie for a couple days after I had seen it. I still haven't decided on which way I perceive the ending to be.
2. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: I remember reading these books when I was a kid. I re-read them when I first found out a movie was being made about them. This film is one of the few book to film adaptations that actually lived up to the billing. I was very impressed with Peter Jackson's vision of what Middle-Earth should look and feel like. The acting was superb, especially Ian McKellan.
3. Gangs of New York: Anything that Martin Scorsese usually gets my interest. The music, cinematography, and acting made this film exceptional. Daniel-Day Lewis is perhaps the finest actor we have seen on film since Marlon Brando in his prime.
4. Snatch: Lock Stock introduced me to this kind of movie and Snatch put me "all in". Jason Statham was introduced to the world in this flick. Brad Pitt also played one of the best roles of his career (this or his work in True Romance are my favorites). Guy Ritchie has become one of my favorite directors because of Snatch.
5. The 40-Year Old Virgin: Putting comedies in a best movies list is difficult to do. Comedies often lack depth or plot. I'm not going to say that The 40-Year Old Virgin has either of these, but man was it funny. The first time I saw this movie made me laugh almost the entire time. I simply had to put it on here because it is probably the funniest movie I have seen since Caddyshack.
So, that is my list of the best recent movies. I'm sure most will disagree with this list, but we each have our own opinion. I loved each of these movies and watch them a couple of times each year when I feel like it.
