There are two ways of filtration slow sand filters and rapid sand filters.
Water filtration systems are process of water purification in which water from sedimentation tank is allowed to pass through a bed a filtering media, usually sand and gravel and the filtrate is collected at the bottom through an under drain system. Essentially, a filter consists of a bed of sand and gravel to remove suspended solids from water, with devices to maintain a uniform rate of flow through the bed and provision for periodical washing of accumulated solids from the filter media. The filter media are very efficient in retaining finer and colloidal particles of clay and sit. It also aid removing colour , odour , turbidity, iron and manganese. Slow sand filters are usually gravity type. In gravity type filters, the water passes through the bed by the action of gravity alone. These types of filters are commonly used in municipal water supplies. Filter medium is mostly sand. In pressure filters. Hydraulic pressure from a supply line forces the water through the bed. The pressure filters are mainly used in small installation like swimming pools, industries, etc. The filter media are sand, anthracites, or diatomaceous earth. Slow sand filter was first developed and used in Great Britain early in the nineteenth century and later a number of plants of this type were constructed in the USA (1890 to 1910).
