Did you know that skin forms the largest organ on the human body? Skin has several functions, so it's important to keep it healthy. It doesn't hurt that healthy skin looks more attractive than dry, wrinkly skin does. Here are some helpful tips for keeping your skin looking and feeling as healthy as possible:
1. Protect yourself from UV rays
There's nothing wrong with spending some time in the sun. In fact, sun is the best disinfectant and it aids in the body's production of Vitamin D. That said, you'll want to protect your body from ultraviolet rays, including UV-A and UV-B rays. So make sure to apply sunscreen properly to your skin, if you're planning to spend time a long time outdoors.
2. Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily
Water provides the body and mind with tons of benefits, which can help you to maintain overall good health. That includes the skin. Drinking enough water will keep your skin moist and supple, instead of dry and wrinkly. It will also help your skin to glow. If you work outdoors or do workouts, then you should consider drinking more than 6-8 glasses of water daily.
3. Quit smoking
Cigarettes typically contain over 100 manmade chemicals. Over time, those chemicals can make your skin dry and wrinkly.
4. Reduce stress
This is one of the most effective ways to prevent the effects of premature aging. Have you ever noticed how quickly world leaders seem to age while they're in office? That's mainly due to stress. Stress can have a devastating effect on your body, and that includes your skin. Experts aren't 100% certain that stress actually "causes" skin problems. But it definitely seems to promote or worsen them. Some skin problems related to stress include acne, blisters, cold sores, hives, and warts. The solution is not to stop worrying. Daily do the best job that you can, and then get a good night's sleep.
5. Avoid air pollution
OK, it might be impossible to do it entirely. But if you're living in an area with high amounts of air pollution, you should consider relocating. Today's world is full of manmade chemicals that can be devastating to your health, including your skin.
6. Exercise your muscles
That includes those on both your body and face. The rule "If you don't use it, you lose it" definitely applies to those muscles. In fact, you can actually perform a "natural" face-lift procedure by doing a daily regimen of different face exercises, such as the ones that the late Jack LaLanne promoted. While doing such face exercises might seem awkward at first, they can help your face to appear young and vibrant.
7. Avoid unhealthy food
The GIGO (garbage in-garbage out) rule definitely applies in terms of diet and skin. If you don't eat healthy foods, you shouldn't expect your skin to be healthy. Follow the old "Food Pyramid" we all learned in elementary school. Avoid high amounts of fat, sugar and salt. Stay away from artificial colors, sweeteners, and preservatives.
