Do you believe making a list of people you know, the 3 foot rule, calling business opportunity leads is the only way to succeed?
Not so long ago I shared the same belief because I was introduced to network marketing or multilevel marketing back in 1988. I've been in network marketing for the last 20 years and have been in the top 1% of industry income earners for the last 13 years. When I started building my network marketing business the Internet did not even exist.
So originally I built my business with the old school methods and yes, you can build a very successful business that way. However the Internet can totally change the speed at which you can build your business and the fun and profitability you will have while doing it.
I was first exposed to Internet network marketing (new school MLM) when I read a book written by Ann Sieg. Ann's ideas literally turned my understanding of how to build my business up side down.
Ann said the old school methods (making a names list, the 3 foot rule, everyone is a prospect, the products sell themselves, anybody can do this, cold calling business opportunity leads) were not the way to build a successful business.
Why? Well deep in your soul you know that the products don't sell themselves, most people are not qualified prospects for what you have to offer, you get tired of faking it till you make it, and people must have skin of steel to withstand all of the rejection and the no's they will hear.
The old school is such an uncomfortable way of doing business that most people who start this way simply quit after the first few months. In fact Ann says the result of these old school methods is a 97% failure rate because most people can't take the rejection required to succeed.
Now when I was first exposed to the idea of using the Internet to market and find the people that are looking for exactly what I had to offer it just sounded too good to be true. Just the idea that you don't have to cold call people to succeed sounded foreign. That people are actually going to call you with their credit cards in hand and tell you they are ready, willing, and able to do business, seemed as if it was completely a fantasy.
So when I was first exposed to Internet network marketing I procrastinated. Why? 1. It sounded too good to be true. 2. I didn't know where to begin. 3. I didn't know anything about Google Adwords, Pay Per Click, Affiliate Marketing, Search Engines or Social Marketing. So for the next year I stood around and did nothing.
If you find yourself in that same position let me encourage you to take the first step. Perhaps your first step is to pick up a beginners book about the Internet or go online and do a search for "The Renegade Network Marketer".
Simply start by educating yourself and have the clear intention that you can and you will master Internet network marketing.
If you take one online step at a time you will find when the time is right and you are ready, the teacher will appear.
I remember my first conversation with my teacher Malika Duke. She was so excited about the fact that people were calling her and wanting to sign up with her that it was just inspiring to talk with her on the phone.
Next thing I knew I was learning about Google, auto responders, and social marketing. You know it's not so difficult once you are clear about what to do and if you have confidence that it will work for you because you know it is working for others. Thanks Malika for giving me the confidence to move forward.
Now it's about 4 months later, I have made mistakes along the way but I have an experience I'd like to share with you.
Malika had told me that if I just do the best that I can and continue to expand my knowledge of Internet network marketing people would be calling me just like they were calling her.
A couple of days ago it happened. The phone rang and the voice on the other end of the line said, "Mr. Robert Ford?" I said, "Yes, this is Robert." "Well Mr. Ford I just finished your article on the 9 Questions to Ask Before Starting Your Own Home-Based Business and I really liked what you had to share. Do you have some time to talk with me?"
I nearly fell out of my chair. I can't remember when using old school methods a prospect asked me if I had time to talk to them. The shoe was always on the other foot because I was constantly chasing prospects.
I can't tell you how good that felt to have a lead calling me. We went on to have a very relaxed, fun and meaningful conversation as I explored how I could help him
In the past two days I have 4 new people who have begun working with me. What is so incredible is that it was their idea to initiate doing business with me.
What a contrast to the endless hours of calling business opportunity leads only to have people hang up on you or not keep their appointments because you were not offering what they were looking for.
So if you want to have more fun and grow faster in your network marketing business then you have to put the Internet into your network marketing business.
If you do, you will get much more done with much less time and effort. You will have people calling you because they are attracted to doing business with you. You will discover that you will start having fun, so will your team, and your organizational retention will sky rocket.
It all starts with your willingness to learn how to master the Internet and your intention to keep moving forward until you do.
Go ahead take the first step. It is all right to make mistakes along the way; this is part of your learning process. You don't have to be perfect, just good enough (this was a hard lesson for me to learn).
In conclusion I want you to know that if this old dog from the old school of network marketing can get prospects calling him wanting to do business with him then anyone can. Come on... Just Do It. You will be glad you did!
