Atwal is heading to the Masters and thanks his triumph at the Wyndham Championship in August. The victory made him the first Indian to win on the PGA Tour.
The night before his maiden win, Atwal got a text message from Woods, his neighbor in Windermere, Florida, with advice on how to approach the final round, which he held on to win by one stroke with Callaway FT i-Brid Irons .
Now, Woods will be able to offer his experience on how to deal with the tight and long fairways of Augusta. "He's going to show me around there and it should be fun," said Atwal. "He's the best. He knows the golf course really well. We are members at the same course, so we see a lot of each other."
Last year, when Woods returned he took during his well-publicized marital problems, it was Atwal that he spent much of his practice time with.
Atwal began his golfing career at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club in India and after taking part in high school in Long Island, New York, he returned to India, playing on the Asian and European Tour, before moving to Florida in 2003 and making his efforts on the PGA Tour by playing with ping g15 driver. Atwal, who wins three times on the European Tour. He heads to Augusta having missed the cut in 60 of the 131 PGA Tour events, including one appearance each at the season's other three majors.
Atwal entered the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill earlier this month, an event that many contenders, including Woods, use as a final tune-up for Augusta. Atwal shot three even-par rounds of 72 before a closing with six over par on Sunday.
Atwal is not setting himself targets at Augusta or making proclamations of intent. "I just want to play well there, I don't have any goals," Atwal said. "Being my first Masters I just want to have fun out there as well. It is hard to do that when you aren't playing that well but I'd like to just go out and enjoy myself. But his practice partner has higher goals and expectations and Atwal has seen enough of Woods recently to believe he is close to hitting his peak again.
