PS3 RLOD? PS3 Flashing Red Light? PS3 YLOD? Fix your PS3 yourself today!

What is PS3 RLOD? Watch this video below:

The Red Light Of Death or RLOD as it's called is a crippling error for the ps3 and can bring many gamers to their knees However not all is lost when this happens as there are a few things that you can do to solve this problem and get your system back up and running.

First off a diagnosis for this particular light code is in order. The RLOD indicates a general hardware failure and is most common on the 60 gb and 40gb fat model of the PS3. This can be flashing or it can be solid but the meaning is the same. In a nutshell something in your system isn't working as it should.

Now your options for dealing with this aren't as limited as you may think. If your system is still under warranty then contact Sony and have them repair it for you. If it's not under warranty then you can either pay $150.00 to get it fixed, or try to repair it yourself. Obviously if your warranties up then the latter option seems more viable then paying $150 to send it away for a few weeks with no PS3 to play in the meantime!

The first step on repairing your unit is troubleshooting what piece of hardware is causing the RLOD. First off you need to check, unplug, and then replug all your cables plus your power cord. Make sure to cycle the power switch as well just to be thorough. If this doesn't fix it then there are a few other solutions that you can try.

If you're RLOD is blinking and refusing to let the system stay powered on then you definitely have an overheating problem. There are too many reasons to list here for this to happen but you have two major options available to you. You can either setup a bunch of USB fans in front of the unit, or take it apart and reapply thermal grease to the heat sink and processors. If your PS3 will stay in a state of temporary operation but still shows the RLOD error then you can either replace the Blu Ray drive or the hard drive. It is highly recommended that your unit be off and unplugged for this and there is no guarantee that it will work. But in many gamers minds it's worth a shot and much better than the idea of sending it away for several weeks.

The early models of the PS3 were subject to overheating because of the PS2 chip. Sony included the PS2s processor in order to achieve backward compatibility and later switched over to software emulation. Unfortunately the PS2 chip isn't as heat tolerant as the PS3s chips are and is prone to overheating and failure. The slim PS3's are much better with this problem and run up to 30% cooler than their earlier counterparts.

If you suffer from the RLOD then hopefully these steps can help you. While not guaranteed they can often prove helpful for some. Just be careful when working on the inside of your PS3 as it is very delicate. Remember that if you are unsure of yourself that it's better to learn from this video tutorail: Fix your PS3 today!
