Video games have been popular for almost 30 years. Yes, I know, video games have been around longer than that, but they weren't really that popular until Nintendo arrived in the mid 80's. Nintendo brought about an entirely new aspect to video games. Cool games were debated about in my elementary school (Mike Tyson's Punchout anyone?). Gaming became an accepted form of recreation. Most of the earlier systems were clunky (I'm looking at you Atari). Nintendo streamlined the field and made it accessible to almost anyone.
Although Nintendo paved the way for the industry and how it is represented today, many other game companies played their part. Sega, Sony, and Microsoft have had their hand in shaping the video game industry. In addition, computer games have been around longer than console games. Computer games have always been ahead of the curve on graphics and depth, but lacked in those games that require twitch reflexes (FPS).
Since the industry has been paved in a variety of ways, I am going to list my favorite games of all time, regardless of platform. All games will be on the table.
1. Final Fantasy VII: This is, to me, the greatest game ever made. I cannot count the number of times I have played this game through to see the story. The entire reason I bought the Playstation I is because of this game. The graphics were in a league of their own at the time. The storytelling is second to none. This game had me hooked like no other game before. I have been debating on buying this again from the Playstation Store because it is such a cool game.
2. World of Warcraft: I put this game so high because of sheer longevity. I have never played a game as long as I did this one. I played WoW for 4.5 years almost nonstop. This is one of the most maddeningly addictive RPG's ever.
3. Mortal Kombat 2: This is my favorite arcade game ever. I was working in an arcade the day we got this game. I played this for about a year while I worked there. Other games were competition (Street Fighter II, Killer Instinct) but, none bring back the memories like this one. "Get Over Here"
4. Halo: The first Halo was a shooter unlike anything we had seen before. Huge maps and amazing graphics really made this into a top-notch FPS. I spent many hours at LAN parties playing this amazing game.
5. Metal Gear Solid: The storytelling really made this series stand out. I could put almost any of the series here, but I decided to go with my favorite of the bunch.
This is an atypical list and it was very difficult for me to narrow down. Some honorable mentions: Skate or Die, Madden 2004, Tiger Woods Golf 2010, Legend of Zelda, Contra, Neverwinter Nights, Rome Total War, and Starcraft to name a few.
