Five Best Cars Under $20,000

In an ideal situation, we would be able to buy what we need with only a cursory glance at the price tag. Not anymore. The current economic downturn has most of us looking for new and creative ways to pinch pennies, and often the result is like trying to get blood from a stone.

The second largest purchase you will ever make is an automobile, and with even sub compacts running in the mid 20's price range, it becomes progressively more difficult to find a good reliable car on a budget. That being said, there are some options, so I offer my choices for the five best cars under $20,000.

Mazda 5 the only mini-van on the list. This gets the nod because of the size and amount of room you get for $20,000. As opposed to the Kia Sedona ($23K) or the Honda Odyssey ($35K), the Mazda 5 offers seating for 6, with ample room, sliding rear doors, and a long wheelbase. And all for around $18,800.

Volkswagen Jetta The Honda Accord may be the mainstay of the import market, but the equally reliable and long lasting Jetta continues to impress, and for a lot less money. Jetta offers a spacious cabin, tall profile, and is able to accommodate all ages and sizes. It's fun to drive, too! Top of the line Jettas price out in the low $20's, but the entry level model can be had nicely equipped for around $18,500.

Dodge Caliber It may be ugly as sin, but still not a bad ride for $17K. Sort of a cross between a compact and an SUV, the Caliber offers 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space with ample entrance room and a plastic lining for protection. The Caliber doesn't handle or drive as well as many of its rivals, but the ample room and high driving position make up for those shortcomings.

Scion xB Another compact/SUV combo, the xB offers a very high roofline, wide cargo bay, and a back seat that is large enough for older children and young adults. One of the best family car offers around, the Scion offers a lot of bang for the buck, nicely equipped for only $16,500.

Nissan Versa Nissan has really been firing on all cylinders for a number of years now, offering above average products for a more than competitive price. The Nissan Versa is no exception, ringing in at number one with a price tag of just under $11,000. It offers more interior room than the Toyota Yaris or Honda Fit, qualifying it as a (get ready) mid-sized car. The Versa is not exactly loaded with options, but it's incredibly low sticker price makes it an attractive option for families or anybody living on a tighter than usual budget.

So there you have it. You can indeed ride in style without signing over your first and second born. All that remains is for you to go see which one best fits your pocketbook and traveling needs.
