The Higher Education sector in Australia is made up of universities, colleges, TAFE colleges, and other higher education institutions, often referred to as higher education providers.
Nationally recognised higher education awards include degrees at Bachelor, Master or Doctorate levels. Higher education awards also include Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate, or any other award (such as Diploma or Advanced Diploma) specified as a higher education award under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
Qualifications in Australia are recognised as part the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). AQF qualifications are endorsed by Australian governments, so an AQF qualification is recognised all around Australia and by other countries.
What types of institutions are there in Australia?
Institutions are broadly divided into these categories: Universities, TAFE colleges; and Independent Collegesstudy us.
There are 39 universities in Australia in total and within that there a couple of groups.
The 'Group of Eight' (Go8) markets themselves as the leading universities and are consequently the most prestigious and competitive. The member universities of this network are:

There is also the Australian Technological Network (ATN) which is group of five Australian universities that share a common focus on the practical application of higher education studies and research resulting in graduates who are ready to enter their chosen profession. The member universities of this network are:
Curtin University of Technology; University of South Australia; RMIT University; University of Technology Sydney; and Queensland University of Technology.
The application process
Once you have found a course at your chosen institution you should apply directly to that university or college. You can often find application forms within institution websites, do this by clicking on the website link on this website from the institution in which you're interested. You can also email an enquiry or specific question from the Hotcourses website.
Visa process
In order to study in Australia you will need a student visa. The requirements for this visa will vary according to your nationality and the nature of your study. Check out the Australian Immigration Department website for more information.
