I launched my website 3 months ago and WOW have I learned a lot!!!
Here are some tips I can offer anyone who is looking to do the same thing.
1) Do your Research - Your idea is probably already out there - FACT. That does not mean that you can't peruse your idea, you just have to do it better than anyone else. Take an example of a competitors site, sit down and say, if I owned this site, how would I make it better. As a customer you are more likely to see the problems as well as opportunities facing the site. Take these notes and do it better!
2) Building Traffic Will Take Time - Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will your traffic. You have to get out there and bring traffic to your site. Give your users a reason to return as well. Constantly adding new content to your site will keep users happy and peak Google's Interest. GOOGLE, now that a big one. The best way to drive traffic to your site is through organic traffic (the results that appear in the search results down the middle of the page) but this takes time - a lot of time. In order for a pages on your site to even get indexed my Google (by their googlebots) the content on your site has to be relevant and consistent. If a page on your site is about Rainbows, then make sure the word "Rainbow" appears in the "Title Tag", "Description Tag", "Keyword Tag" and in the actual body text of the page (where a human can read it). Also, put of picture of a Rainbow on the page, but importantly, make sure the "ALT Tag" of the picture states "Rainbow" as Google cant figure out what the picture is of without that. All these things help with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and will help grow your traffic.
3) Market Your Site - Sitting back with the best site in the world will get you nowhere! Unless you market your site, your dead in the water. Adwords is a great place to start as it is a fairly simple system to learn. Adwords = paid for traffic. You type in Rainbow, my ad appears, you click on it, I pay Google for your traffic. (Google wouldn't be the Juggernaut it is today if this didn't work) If you are looking to start a website and don't know how adwords work, start reading now!
These are just a few of the things I have learned in the past 3 months and I am by no means a guru at this! I am leaning constantly and just thought I would share a few simple tips I wish someone had told me.
I am however please to announce that i have received 52 Company and 116 Product Listings, 1193 Unique Visitors and 6060 Page Views since I started my Adwords Campaign 16 days ago.
