For me there are two distinct and different sides to Internet Marketing. First we have the marketing side. This is where we get to write article, create blog posts, and star in our own videos. To be successful marketing on the Internet, we need to develop our basic writing and copy writing skills. Secondly we have what some people might refer to as the technological side. If you are anything like me, the technology of how the Internet works behind the senses is hard to understand. I knew that I typed a web address into my web browser and up popped the web site I was looking for. Anything deeper than that went straight over my head.
As I dove deeper into my Internet Marketing strategy and learned more and more techniques, it became apparent that some self-study or classes on Internet technology would be beneficial. I quickly became fascinated by the inner workings of the World Wide Web. While I am anything but an expert, I would like to discuss a subject that I find very useful in my day-to-day marketing activities. That is the use of File Transfer Protocol software.
File Transfer Protocol, or FTP, is a set of rules that allow us to transfer files from our computer to an Internet server and vice versa. The files could contain images or videos that we intend to use on our web sites or include in our blog posts. FTP software installed on our computer lets us connect directly to our Internet server. FileZilla is one company that offers this software for free.
I will assume that we have downloaded the FileZilla software onto our computer. As simply as I can, I will explain the process of file transfer:
Login Page: To login to the FileZilla software, you will need the web address (URL) of your web site or blog. The URL contains your domain name, which tells FileZilla where to look on the Internet server. You only need to input this information once, as it will be saved for future logins.
FileZilla Screen: After you have logged into FileZilla, the File Transfer Protocol screen appears. The screen is divided in half. The left side of the screen is a copy of everything on your computer's hard drive. The right side of the screen will show what is stored in your domain on the Internet server. The information is organized on the server in folders and files in the same way it is organized on your computer.
File Transfer: To transfer a file from your computer to the Internet server, first locate the file on the left side of the screen (your computer's hard drive). Then simply drag and drop the file onto the right side of the screen (the Internet server). Depending on the size of the file, the transfer could be instant or take a few minutes.
I realize that writing articles and making videos is the fun side of Internet Marketing. But, if we want to become a skilled marketing expert, we must take the time to learn those skills that will allow us to create our own brand on the Internet. Personalizing a web site or blog post will attract many more visitors than a generic site used by millions. The fun is in the learning process.
