One day I found myself shopping football helmet display cases, and I had to ask, how did I get here? Well, it all started on a warm sunny day in late June when I married the man of my dreams. On that bright day, I said "I do" with all the hopes and dreams of any new bride, visualizing dreamy weekend getaways and long Sunday mornings drinking coffee and reading the paper together.
And then football season started. And my little fantasy died a quick, but painful death.
At first, I fought it. Every Sunday as he got ready for tailgating at 6:00 am, I would make my snide comments. Sometimes I would even lay on a little guilt trip, just for fun. After a few weeks, my astute husband asked if there was a problem. I relented and explained that I was feeling left out, and that although I had gone with him to many games, football just wasn't my thing. And I had wrongly assumed it wouldn't be his anymore either.
Being the wonderful person that he is, he offered to sell his season tickets or split them. Well, isn't that great? Then I could be pathetic and mean. That's not a good solution. So, I said I appreciated the offer, but this was an issue I had to work out myself.
So, I got called the other football wives and we created Spa Sundays during football season. Sometimes we do the spa, sometimes we go antiquing, and sometimes we just hang out over a long happy hour (and at the chic martini bar, not the pub with the football helmet display cases). But we do things that they guys are not fans ofand it's been really a win-win for everybody. The guys have their fun and we have ours, and at the end of the day on Sunday, we're pretty happy to reunite, unwind, and get ready for Monday.
So, I said I was shopping football helmet display cases. Why? Because for our two year anniversary I want to surprise my wonderful hubby for giving me my Sundays with the Girls back and helping me learn how doing our own thing once in awhile is great for a marriage. He has a signed helmet (by whom, I have no idea) that I'm sure he would appreciate being displayed in our home.
