Founded in 1733 by a Quaker from Pennsylvania, the Village of Waterford flourished as a flourmill town, becoming the second largest town in Loudoun County. After the civil war, the village of Waterford experienced stagnant growth and as such, began to fall into a state of disrepair.
It wasn't until descendants of old Waterford families began to buy up their ancestor's property and restore them, that the town got a face lift. In 1970, Waterford was designated a National Historic Landmark District and is one of only three such landmarks in the United States today. As a result of the restoration, you will see many original buildings dating back before 1840 as you drive through the Village of Waterford.
If being close to nature is more your style, Loudoun County also has the Red Rock Wilderness Overlook Park to offer.
