Real Meaning of Mother's Day
Real Meaning of Mother's Day

I wish I could sit here and give you words to describe what my mother means to me. There aren't enough words in the dictionary. I don't know how she did it. - Lebron James

In everybody's life, the place that a mother holds can never ever be taken over by anyone else. She is the only person who is always there to love him, care for him and even makes a lot of sacrifices for him. There isn't any other person in this world who will be willing to do the things for you that your mother does. It is with the aim of thanking a mother for all her concern, love, care and efforts that Mother's Day celebration started throughout the world.

But such a noble idea is a lot more commercialized today. Today the world has mixed emotions about the commercialization of Mother's Day. Most people, including many mothers, enjoy giving and receiving gifts for their services, but a lot of people also think that this occasion has been started by some florists or some gift card companies in order to boost their sales.

But the history of Mother's day started far earlier. It is said that there was a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece, which was to worship Cybele, great mother of Greek gods. In modern world one of the early initiatives to celebrate Mother's Day was taken in the United States. It was the "mother's day proclamation" written in 1870 by Julia ward Howe. But the credit for starting this celebration in modern world is given to Anna Jarvis who after her mother death has started a campaign to make Mother's Day a recognized holiday. She succeeded in the year 1914 and President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day to honor mothers whose sons had died in war. And from that year onwards we celebrate Mother's Day on every second Sunday in the month of May. Slowly almost all the countries of the world have accepted this tradition. In some parts of the US, it is traditional to wait until Mothers Day to plant tomatoes.

It is true that with the growth of markets and marketing strategies the concept of celebrating Mother's Day is getting much more commercialized now. We start getting mails and sms almost a month before which is most of the times annoying, but even then this holiday is still provides an excuse for grown up children to feel better about themselves for doing something special for their moms.
