Bulbs In The Garden
Bulbs In The Garden

If you love spring and summer then you will love the variety of shapes and colours produced by the plants, but if you are an avid gardener you'll know that it is often difficult to grow bulbs for yourself, even with the best will in the world they often don't flower and it can be very frustrating.

There are two types of bulbs, hardy and tender. The hardy bulbs respond to the cold in winter and flower early, like snowdrops, whereas tender bulbs don't like the cold and are best stored in doors over winter. If you don't have the time to dig up your bulbs when they have ceased to flower then put a heavy layer of mulch over the beds to protect the bulbs in the hope they will re flower the following year. If you protect them well enough then they should flower year after year and provide you with a beautiful and colourful garden.

For flowers that will come up in spring choose varieties like the daffodil, narcissus and tulip. The bright colours will really lift your mood as they start to flower, and they will herald the start of the spring. For summer flowers to adorn your garden choose gladioli, lilies and elephant ear. Autumn flowers will be the colchicum, dahlia and magic lily. These will add different hues in to the browns, reds and oranges that are synonymous with the autumn months.

Most of the plants require being planted in the autumn previous to ensure they have taken in the soil properly for the following year. Make sure that the soil stays moist to enhance their growth and they are in an area of the garden where they will receive plenty of sun to encourage them to grow again when the weather starts to warm up.

If you have a house with a garden make sure that you have Content Insurance to protect your belongings in the case of theft. It would be devastating to have your plants pinched after all the work you have put in over the year, prepping the garden and watering the plants!
