Unlocking The Skinny Code - Treatment For Binge Eating Disorder

Binge eating disorder is also known as compulsive eating behavior or emotional eating. It is the most common eating disorder, and people who are suffering from it should get help from a health care professional such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, or clinical social worker. A person who is suffering from binge eating disorder is seen to binge eat more than twice a week for six months or more, eat much more rapidly than normal, eat until uncomfortably full, eat large amounts of food even when not hungry, eat alone because of embarrassment, feel disgusted or ashamed after a binge eating episode, and gain weight excessively. Well, there are a variety of treatment modalities that you can choose from. One is cognitive behavioral therapy. With this method, the person suffering from binge eating disorder is taught how to keep track of his eating and change his unhealthy eating habits. The person is taught how to change the way he acts in tough situations, and to feel better about his body shape and body weight. Another method is interpersonal psychotherapy, where the person is taught to look at his relationships with friends and family in order to identify problems, and then to make changes in those identified problem areas.

Drug therapy is also a common treatment modality for binge eating disorder. The drugs used may be antidepressants or even anti-seizure medications like topiramate. Other therapies include dialectical behavior therapy which helps people regulate their emotions, weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery, exercise, and self-help. People who binge eat can refer to self-help books, videos, or even groups wherein they can find the support they need.

All these methods seem to be equally helpful in trying to break the habit of binge eating. However, researchers are still trying to find the one which is most helpful in controlling the disorder. A combination of methods, such as combining drug therapy with behavioral therapy, has shown promising results for treating overweight and obese individuals with binge eating disorder.

So far, the best approach or treatment for binge eating disorder is combining at least two of the methods that were previously discussed.
