Why Not Having a Grease Trap Is A Costly Mistake

Enormous amounts of grease are normally discharged with waste water either at home or from restaurants. This is why not having grease traps to intercept the waste before it finds its way into drainage and sewer systems can be very costly. The clogging of both drainage and sewer systems that is caused thereby has over time become too expensive to handle; prompting regulation by local authorities.

Restaurants are the main target of these regulations in an attempt to clamp down on the massive discharge of oil and fat into sewer systems. Majority of sewer blockages in big cities are attributed to waste discharges from restaurants. As a result, all restaurants and cafeterias are now required to install devices that will ideally intercept and redirect the waste for recycling.

These devices come in various sizes and types in an effort to meet the needs and budgets of different establishments. The different sizes of restaurants and cafeterias mean that the needs and financial ability for each establishment differs.

Having a wide variety of devices ensures that every establishment is able to afford one, in order to comply with the regulations. To ensure compliance, most local authorities carry out testing and facilities found to be contravening the requirement by exceeding the grease content allowed, are penalized heavily.

Each device comes with an array of features that makes it suitable for different facilities. For example, there are automatic grease removal devices that are integrated with dish-washing machines. These devices are meant to catch any oil from the waste water that flows from the dishwasher.

These automatic devices can also be installed in the drains to filter the waste water when washing pots, pans, and plates. The trapped oil is then stored in a container beside the dishwasher or drains and can be disposed off later during routine cleaning. However, some establishments may choose to recycle instead of disposing.

Another common device is the compact interceptor, which is suitable for small restaurants and establishments. The advantage with this type of device is that it has a large storage capacity, in spite of its small size. When storage space is a major issue, this compact device is the ultimate space saver.

There is absolutely no excuse for any establishment to flout the regulations. Having no grease traps is detrimental to all and sundry since the high cost of maintaining the sewer system will always trickle down to the consumer.
