There are a variety of ways by which a book can be bound. Paperback binding, saddle stitch binding, and hardcover binding are among others. Hardcover book binding is the method of binding books that is more commonly seen in encyclopedias, thick books, and diaries. In this method, a rigid or thick cover is stitched in the spine or attached with the help of a special glue. In hardcover binding, several signatures are sewed together and a thick cover is attached with the help of an adhesive.

There are many advantages to hardcover binding. Books that are hard bound are more protected than others, and so they usually last much longer. These types of books are perfect for people who love collecting books, or for those who own a personal library. The result of this style of binding is well worth the effort, as the final product is beautiful and will be well protected.
The first step to bind a book is, of course, to keep all the equipment and materials ready. What you need include the following: an awl, a big needle, a strong thread, glue, thick cardboard cover, and paper clamps. Once your materials are all ready, you can take the signatures and then make four holes on the spine at equal distances. Take the first signature, and run the needle into the first hole, out of the second, into the third, and out of the fourth hole. Do this with the remaining signatures.
After having all the signatures ready, clamp tightly near the spine, and then apply glue all over the spine. Let the glue dry before creating the cover from hard cardboard. Cut three pieces of this cardboard, two of which are for the top and bottom covers and the last one for the spine. Apply glue on the top and bottom paper of the attached signatures, as well as on the cover. Place the cover carefully on the signatures, clamp tightly, and keep your finished product under a heavy set of books or other objects for some time.
Again, hardcover book binding is perhaps the method that will make your book last longer.
