Gematria and the Birth of Jesus
Gematria, which is the use of the numerical value of words to discover hidden truth in Scripture, can be used to confirm as truth what is written in the Bible. One such truth is what is written in Scripture regarding the birth of Jesus. In both Hebrew, the language of the OT, and Greek, the language of the NT, numbers are represented by characters of the alphabet. (See tables of gematria values for Hebrew and Greek letters at the end of this article) Therefore, every word has a numerical value as well as a specific meaning. It has been proposed that the numerical value of words and phrases have an association.
Authorities in gematria insist that only the exact words from the "original" translations of Scripture must be used for gematria values to be valid. However, as I am illiterate in the languages of the Bible, and did not know the proper spelling of words in Hebrew and Greek according to rules of grammar, I began to use only the root word spelling (usually Hebrew, but sometimes Greek) for each word in a sentence directly from, or at least consistent with Scripture. I discovered amazing associations related to the numerical value of complete sentences composed in this manner. I found that sentences using root words which restate what is written in Scripture concerning Jesus computed to the numerical values associated with His name.
In the gematria examples to be shown in this article each root word that is used in the sentence will be identified according to Strong's Concordance, the sentence will be shown in the "shorthand translation" of root words in Hebrew (Hebrew is written from right to left) and sometimes Greek, and the numerical value for each word will be given. The total gematria values for the sentences will then provide confirmation of Biblical truth regarding the birth of Jesus through the following numerical values for words in Greek:
JESUS = ' = 888
CHRIST = = 1480
JESUS CHRIST = ' = 800 + 1480 = 2368
LORD JESUS CHRIST = ' = 800 + 888 + 1480 = 3168
Isaiah prophesied of a coming Messiah: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be on his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9: 6. (Hebrew is written from right to left)
The child (H3206) shall be (H1961) called (H7121) Wonderful, (H6382) Counselor, (H3289) the mighty (H1368) God (H410).
When additional Biblical truth regarding the Messiah prophesied by Isaiah is added to words from this verse, it is confirmed that the prophecy is fulfilled inJesus Christ.
The Messiah (H4899)shall come:(H935) the child (H3205) shall be (H1961)called (H7121)Wonderful,(H6382) Counselor,(H3289) the mighty (H1368)God,(H410) the Prince, (H8269)the Savior (H3467) of all (H3605) men, (H120) and theSon (H1121)ofGod.(H430)
TheMessiah (H4899)shall come:(H935) the Lord (H3068)and Savior (H3467)of men (H120)shall be (H1961)called (H7121)Wonderful,(H6382)the mighty (H1368)God,(H410) the Prince (H8269)ofPeace.(H7965)
Isaiah also prophesied that the Messiah would be conceived and born of a virgin, and his name would be called Immanuel: Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7: 14. The virgin birth of Christ is something that even many Christians find too amazing to be true, but gematria confirms the truth of Scripture.
A child (H3206) born (H3206) the Son (H1121) of God (H430) conceived (H2029) of a virgin (H1330) shall come. (H935)
9 +443 + 210 + 86 + 52 + 44 + 44 = 888 = JESUS
Behold, (H2009) the only (H3173) Son (H1121) of the Lord (H136) God, (H3068) conceived (H2029) of a virgin. (H1330)
443 + 210 + 26 + 65 + 52 + 32 + 60 = 888 = JESUS
Virgin (H1330) conceived (H2029) Son (H1121) of God (H430) and Son (H1121) of man. (H120)
45 + 52 + 86 + 52 + 210+ 443 = 888 = JESUS
Behold (H1887) the child (H3206) whose name (H8034) is called (H7121) Immanuel. (H6005)
197 + 301 + 340 + 44 + 6 = 888 = JESUS
The only (H3173) Messiah (H4899) called (H7121) Immanuel. (H6005)
197 + 301 + 358 + 32 = 888 = JESUS
For (H3588) his name (H8034) shall be (H1961) called (H7121) Immanuel. (H6005)
197 + 301 + 20 + 340 + 30 = 888 = JESUS
With the method of gematria which uses the primary spelling of words, it is proven that Jesus is the child called Immanuel, the only Son of God, and He is the Lord God.
The child ( H3206) born (H3206) the only (H3173)Son (H1121) of God,(H430) the Lord (H3068) God,(H430) shall be (H1961)called (H7121)Immanuel.(H6005)
There is further confirmation of the prophecy in Isaiah that the Messiah, the promised Savior, would be a son born of a virgin.
Conceived (H2029)of a virgin, (H1330) the Messiah (H4899)shall be born (H3205)the Savior (H3467)of men. (H120)
45 + 380 +44 + 358 + 443 + 210 = 1480 = CHRIST
I have used the primary spelling of Hebrew words in most instances, but the numerical values of the primary spelling of Greek words can confirm the truth of Scripture as well. The Greek word "" can be used to mean "and," "even," "also," or "indeed." The latter of these meanings is used in the following.
Indeed, (G2532) born (G1080) of (G1537) a virgin.(G3933)
31 + 909 + 25 + 515 = 1480 = CHRIST
By two other numerical values the same truth is revealed, and it is even more specific.
The only (G3441)man (G435)of Galilee (G1057)virgin (G3933)born. (G1080)
430 + 159 + 355 + 515 + 909 = 2368 = JESUS CHRIST
The Son (G5207)of God (G2316)which (G3748)shall be born (G1080)of a virgin.(G3933)
680 + 284 + 780 + 909 + 515 = 3168 = LORD JESUS CHRIST
There is yet more gematria evidence to confirm this truth. Isaiah prophesied the sign that the Lord would give to prove what child would be the Messiah: Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7: 14.
A sign (G4592) of the covenant (G1242)the Messiah (G3323)conceived (G4815)of a virgin. (G3933)
= 383 + 60 + 656 + 1554 + 515 = 3168 = LORD JESUS CHRIST
Virgin (G3933)born (G1080)of God,(G2316) the only begotten (G3439)Son (G5207)of God.(G2316)
515 + 909 + 284 + 496 + 680 + 284 = 3168 = LORD JESUS CHRIST
The Messiah was prophesied to come out of Bethlehem: But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel, whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Micah 5: 2. Gematria confirms the prophecy that Jesus is the child who was born the only Son of God in the town of Bethlehem.
The child (H3206) born (H3205) the only (H3173) Son (H1121) of God (H430) shall be (H1961) from (H4480) Bethlehem (H1035) of Judah. (H3063)
But thou, (H859) Bethlehem, (H1035) though thou be (H1961) little, (H6810) yet out of (H4480) thee shall come forth (H3318) the Messiah (H4899) to be (H1961) ruler (H4910) in Israel; (H3478) the Lord, (H3068) whose goings forth (H4163) have been from old. (H4480) (H6924)
Out of (H4480) Bethlehem (H1035) shall come forth (H3318) the ruler (H4910) of Israel, (H3478) the Messiah (H4899) and Savior, (H3467) the only (H3173) Son (H1121) of God, (H430) whose goings forth (H4163) have been from old, (H4480) (H6924) from everlasting. (H4480) (H3117) (H5769)
The name (H8034) of the Holy One, (H6918) the ruler (H4910) and Prince, (H8269) the Son (H1121) of God (H430) from (H4480) Bethlehem (H1035) of Judah (H3063)
God (H430) shall send (H7971) a Savior, (H3497) the only (H3173) Son (H1121) of God: (H430) the Messiah (H4899) shall be born (H3205) of a virgin (H1330) in the town (H2346) of Bethlehem. (H1035)
The Bible says that an angel came to Mary and told her that she would bear a son: And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest Luke 1: 30-32. The birth of Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Matthew 1: 23.
The Holy (H6944) Spirit (H7307) came (H935) upon (H5921) her and said, (H559) Thou wilt conceive (H2029) the child (H3205) of the Lord (H3068) God (H430) and call (H7121) his name (H8034) Immanuel, (H6005) God (H430) with (H5973) us.
Bethlehem is also known as the city of David. In the Gospel of Luke, regarding the story of Jesus' birth, it is written:And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you this day is bornin the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2: 11. When the truth that Jesus, the Son of God andSavior, was born in the city of David is proclaimed using Hebrew root words, confirmation comes from thegematria value of the sentences.
Born (H3205) in the city (H5892) of David, (H1732) a Savior, (H3467) the only (H3173) Son (H1121) of God. (H430)
86 + 52 + 32 + 380 + 14 + 280 + 44 = 888 = JESUS
Unto (H413) youthis (H1931) day (H3117) is born (H3205) in the city (H5892) of David (H1732) the Savior (H3467) of men, (H120) the Lord. (H3068)
The angel (H4397) said, (H559) Fear (H3372) not, (H408) for (H3588) unto (H413) you is born (H3205) this (H1931) day (H3117) in the city (H5892) of David (H1732) a Savior. (H3497) The child (H3206) which (H834) is born (H3205) is the Messiah. (H4899)
The angel (H4397) said, (H559) I bring (H935) good tidings: (H1319) unto (H413) you is born (H3205) a Savior, (H3497) the child (H3206) is the Son (H1121) of God. (H430)
The angel (H4397) of the Lord (H3068) said (H559) to the shepherds, (H7462) For (H3588) unto (H413) you is born (H3205) this (H1931) day (H3117) in the city (H5892) of David, (H1732) a Savior. (H3497)
The angel (H4397) said (H559) to the shepherds, (H7462) For (H3588) unto (H413) you is born (H3205) this (H1931) day (H3117) in the city (H5892) of David, (H1732) a Savior (H3497) which (H834) is the Son (H1121) of the Father, (H1) the Messiah. (H4899)
The angel (H4397) said (H559) to the shepherds, (H7462) I bring (H935) good tidings (H1319) unto (H413) men; (H120) For, (H3588) born (H3205) this (H1931) day (H3117) in the city (H5892) of David, (H1732) is a Savior, (H3497) the Messiah. (H4899)
The angel (H4397) said, (H559) Fear (H3372) not, (H408) I bring (H935) good tidings; (H1319) a Savior (H3497) is born (H3205) which (H834) is the Messiah. (H4899)
The angel (H4397) of the Lord (H3068) said (H559) to the shepherds, (H7462) Fear (H3372) not, (H408) for, (H3588) behold, (H2009) I bring (H935) good tidings (H1319) unto (H413) men; (H120) for, (H3588) born (H3205) this (H1931) day (H3117) in the city (H5892) of David, (H1732) a Savior. (H3497)
The angel (H4397) of the Lord (H3068) said (H559) to the shepherds, (H7462) Fear (H3372) not, (H408) I bring (H935) good tidings (H1319) unto (H413) men; (H120) for, (H3588) unto (H413) you is born (H3205) this (H1931) day (H3117) in the city (H5892) of David, (H1732) a Savior (H3497) which (H834) is the Messiah. (H4899)
The next verse after the one's indicated in Luke says: And this shall be a sign unto you; ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. Luke 2: 12. When this additional stipulation is added to what has already been shown, we have the following.
The angel (H4397) said, (H559) Fear (H3372) not, (H408) for, (H3588) behold, (H2009) I bring (H935) good tidings (H1319) unto all (H3605) the people. (H5971)For (H3588) unto (H413) you is born (H3205) this (H1931) day (H3117) in the city (H5892) of David, (H1732) a Savior. (H3497) And this (H2088) shall be (H1961) a sign (H226) unto (H413) you; ye shall find (H4672) the child (H3206) lying (H7257) in a manger. (H18)
The method of gematria to which I have been guided by the Spirit gives proof that what the Bible says about Jesus is true. Is this enough to convince those who have rejected God's gift of His Son? In the Gospel of Matthew, it is written that Jesus asked his disciples whom they thought he was: When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, some say thou art John the Baptist: Some Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whomsay ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art theChrist, the Son of the living God. Matthew 16: 13-16. When this dialogue which was written in Greek is "translated" into Hebrewroot words, it is confirmed that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Son of the living God.
Whom (H834) do men (H120) say (H559) that I (H589) the Son (H1121) of man (H120) am? One (H259) of the prophets. (H5030)But(H3588) whom (H834) say (H559) ye that I (H589) am? The Messiah, (H4899) the Son (H1121) of the living (H2416) God. (H430)
Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God, and the Savior, who was prophesied in the Old Testament, and fulfilled the prophecy when He was born of a virgin in Bethlehem.
