Could you live with your ex? Ask most people this question and you will probably be met with a resounding NO!
So why are so many couples throughout the world continuing to live together even though they are separated or seeking a divorce? The answer is very simple. Harry and Jane had 2 kids and had been married for 10 years. They had drifted apart and Harry had taken up with another woman. The affair did not last long but it was clear to him the marriage was over and had asked Jane for a divorce. She agreed and they decided they would put their house up for sale and begin divorce proceedings.
The RECESSION hit and Harry and Jane realized their house was not going to sell as quickly as they hoped or for as much as it was worth. They did not want to sell their home for a rock bottom price so they made a decision to keep living together until things improved. They were both concerned about the future of their kids and were aware how costly two new places to live was going to be. Harry would be faced with spousal and child-support because Jane was unable to work. He was also unhappy about not playing a prominent role in the upbringing of his children.
They knew it was not going to be easy but felt their decision had a lot of merit. They would live in separate rooms and continue on as a family unit but more in the role of friends or roommates.
Harry and Jane are part of a growing trend and one, which is not likely to decrease with time. Instead of going head to head in a messy divorce many couples are opting to remain together so they will be able to leave their marriage without losing too much. It allows each partner to have the time to work out an amicable divorce settlement sell their home and move on into the future in a positive way. Is this the new way to divorce? Only time will tell.
