For those who don't know, Twitter a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters, displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. (You'll learn how to use this to your advantage later.) Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. (source: Wikipedia)
There are no official figures of the number of Twitter users. A February 2009 Compete.com blog entry ranked Twitter as the third most used social network (Facebook being the largest, followed by MySpace), which puts the number of unique monthly visitors at roughly 6 million and the number of monthly visits at 55 million.
With such a wide array of mediums and it's ease of use, it's easy to see how the popularity of this service has grown so rapidly. With Roughly 60 percent of American teenagers own a cell phone, according to U.S. Cellular statistics, and It's hard for most adults to think of one friend who doesn't own one either. It's a finger on the pulse of the world.
That's right. Twitter is World Wide. In March 2009, a Nielsen.com blog ranked Twitter as the fastest-growing site in the Member Communities category for February 2009. Twitter had a growth of 1382%, Zimbio had a growth of 240%, followed by Facebook with a growth of 228%.
Social Networking has become one the largest platforms for grass-roots marketing. Insiders are already making fortunes with advertising, promotions, and web based deals directly targeted to the vast majority of these Social Networks.
The average Twitter user has 49 friends, and is following any number of others who also have any number of followers and or friends. The most friends held by just one account? 98,712. And there are reportedly less than 600 accounts world wide with no friends at all. This is a gold mine of people anxiously awaiting their next tweet!
Imagine being able to reach hundreds of thousands of people directly with your message. And 140 characters is plenty of room to persuade even the smallest percentage of those to visit your intended destination. Be that a website, phone number, or TV show. Your options are virtually limitless.
