According to records, James Graham was the first European settler in Rochester Hills. He arrived in 1817 and 17 years after, the Avon Township was organized (1835). In 1978, the township was converted as Avon Charter Township, precisely during the month of August.
The township voters approved a city charter on May 1984 and on the 20th of November during the same year, the township was then called the City of Rochester Hills.
