There are many reasons people should start a Twitter account. Before I get into these reasons, I want to point out that there is a false idea floating around that you can get tons of traffic to your website, service or blog posts. For this reason alone, I recommend that everyone start tweeting before they even write their first blog post.
Yes, you can certainly take advantage of Twitter for driving highly targeted traffic to your website, but it totally requires that you develop trust with your followers first. This means that you have to engage with your followers in a way to get to know them and what they are trying to accomplish. For instance, when someone sends me a message to read their blog post, I take a look to see if I have had previous communications with that person and how much they are actually talking with other people. If I find that they are, in fact, engaging with their followers, I'll go ahead and read the blog post. If I like what I read, I'll re-tweet the message, and if I do not see actual engagement with followers, I treat it like spam and ignore it or even stop following the person. So, you have to be real when you are tweeting, otherwise, spamming the socks off of your followers will only lead to failure.
So, in essence, to be successful using Twitter, you have to give more than you receive. You can actually get more traffic to your website this way, but you have to be real. There are people who do nothing with Twitter than just to post links to their blog posts and to whatever they are marketing with their online business. Don't do this, or you'll be wasting your time.
Another reason you need to start a twitter account is that you can find your own voice in the community. This means that once you become well known, people will listen to you and be interested in what you have to say. I know people who have just started blogging and they used Twitter before they started. As a result, their blogs are doing very well, get lots of traffic and because of their reputation, they have the ability to get the word out to all their thousands of followers and make money whenever they need it.
Also, compared to other social networking sites, Twitter is just very simple to set up. All you have to do is start an account and start following and tweeting. You can build a following much easier than you can with a blog and it's extremely faster to get started. It will take some time to become accustomed to the 140-character format of tweeting but the biggest benefit you will get is that you build your network of like-minded followers.
Reason number three is that you will gain much more knowledge about your blog subject, or niche, by connecting with other people with the same interests as you. You get to go around visiting your follower's blogs to get a feel for blog designs, how people organize their blogs, and how blog posts are written. This will aid in the development of your own blog to get you up and running faster and with more success.
Other reasons to have a Twitter account is to have a place where you can get help from experienced bloggers. You can ask questions about blogging and get excellent answers. You can also ask for opinions from people so that you can improve your blog and even how you can improve your writing and set up your blog to get more income and traffic
