If chronic constipation is left ignored or unaddressed with short term measures, it can result to the development of other complications. On a long term note, failure to address the problem can lead to serious complications like:

? Hemorrhoids or piles

? Fecal impaction

? Fecal incontinence

? Anal fissures

Acute constipation can also result to other serious medical conditions like cancer.

Home Remedies for Constipation

Prunes - These are found to be very effective for constipation relief. Aside from prunes, plums are a good alternative.

Prunes are not just good sources of dietary fiber. They also have "dihydrophenylisatin" which is a natural laxative. Though prune juices contain this laxative, it doesn't have much fiber in it.

Although prunes are good for the body and for your constipation problem, the moment you experience too much relief, you need to reduce your intake of this fruit.

Cascara Sagrada - This bark has long been used as a powerful stimulant laxative. Though its use in certain OTC drugs was banned in 2002, brands that had it are still permitted to use it as their main ingredient. This also goes for nutritional supplements and herbal medications.

This laxative works by causing muscle contractions by the large intestines - resulting to bowel movement. You can buy it from pharmacies or drugstores. You need to take it as directed.
