Palaces of Crimea
The Palace of Alexander III in Massandra is one of the best architectural constructions on the southern coast of the Crimea, dating from the second half of the XIX century.
Palace of Alexander III in Massandra
An architectural and arts museum has recently been unveiled in the Palace. Designed as an imitation of a romantic castle on the Loire River, the Palace with its bright looks was to reflect and merge harmoniously with the southern nature.
In Massandra abundant ornamentation, details of a Renaissance style and newly born art nouveau style can be found. However, the dominant feature is its baroque style.
The exquisite decoration of the rooms is admired by all. All the architectural works executed on Massandra Palace are noted for their spectacular quality of workmanship and artistic taste.
The palace is also known as Stalin's Dacha. Surrounded by a nice little park with a fountain and set like Versailles, this charming summer palace once received the Russian Imperial family of Romanov.
Your guided visit to the Palace will allow you to admire its beautiful interior, furniture, art pieces and memorabilia of all sorts - photos, documents, letters - all carefully arranged.
Stroll around the lovely palace garden and enjoy the views.
Upon reboarding the motor coach, you will be taken through some of the narrow, winding streets of the new part of the town. This affords you an opportunity to watch the local people going about their daily business.
Livadia palace
The palace was built in Renaissance style in 1910-1911 according to the designs of M. Krasnov. In the complex the master combined the mysterious Byzantine and Arabic motifs with more traditional Gothic ones. When in the palace, you will see the study of Nicholas II, the last Russian emperor. Now there is an exposition dedicated to the life of the Czar's family in Crimea, but Livadiysky Palace is known because of another event. In 1945 it hosted the historic summit between the three most powerful men in the alliance fighting Nazi Germany, Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Visitors can sit at the round table used for the actual negotiations and in the armchair where members of the 3-member coalition sat to discuss the future of a post Hitler Europe.
The famous - Swallow's Nest.
Swallow's Nest is a fairy tale castle, the glory of a million post-cards, perched at the top of a sheer cliff on Cape Ai-Todor, about 10 km west of Yalta. Built in 1912 for Baron Shteingel, a German oil magnate, it's now an Italian restaurant.
Bakhchisaray palace
The small town of Bakhchisaray brings you face to face with the Tatar era of Crimean's past. From the 15th century until 1783, Bakhchisaray was the seat of the Crimean khans, the last westward bastion of the descendants of Jenghiz Khan 's hordes. From 1475, Crimean tatars were vassals of the Ottoman Empire.
The Tatar khan's palace was built by Russian and Ukrainian slaves in the 16th century under the direction of Persian, Ottoman, and Italian master builders. Inside the main mosque, which dated from 1740, there is a nice wooden minbar (pulpit) and carved mihrabs (prayer niches facing Mecca).
The carved wooden balcony was for women only. In the back garden behind the palace is the harem, three rooms decorated with cushioned seats and carpets, with prettily painted walls and stained glass windows.
A fascinating historical museum contains 12 rooms with a variety of exhibits covering Tatar culture and the life of khans, including textiles, furnishings, glassware, documents and old photos.
Palace "Dulber" is a masterpiece of "oriental Crimean" style.
The palace was built in 1895-1897 for the great prince Petro Romanov. The combination of the palace and the park will get you to the world of oriental fairy tales. Silver domes, battlements, numerous arches and ornaments remind one of 15th century Egypt. Today the palace houses a sanatorium which welcomes its visitors.
Vorontsovsky Palace
The palace was erected according to the designs of E. Blor in 1828-1848 for count Vorontsov. The master of his time was George IV and Queen Victoria's court architect. He was the author of the design of the Westminster Abbey and a part of a front of the Buckingham Palace. There you will learn how one can combine such seemingly incompatible things such as British Gothic and oriental coloring in one building. From the mountains the palace reminds one of an impregnable British castle and from the sea of an oriental temple. Architect Edward Blor was a friend of Walter Scott, so they say that the northern front of the palace illustrates the works of the famous novelist. Today the palace houses a museum.
